Car Comparisons show that Toyota has surpassed Ford as the world’s No. 2 automaker behind General Motors. Car comparisons sales worldwide place Toyota at 6.78 million vehicles, up 9.9 percent from 6.17 million the previous year.
Ford Motor Co. sales slipped to 6.72 million vehicles, down 3.6 percent from 6.97 million the year before.

Car and Driver, Road & Track, and other automotive magazines have been bashing Detroit and US car makers for the past few years; citing poor performance, bad styling, and inept company management.

General Motors Corp. and Ford were the front runners for decades, virtually since mass production of cars began in the early 1900s. GM and Ford have both recently celebrated their 100th year in business.

Toyota has increased its market share to an all-time high of 11.2 percent and established Japan’s No. 1 automaker as the best-selling car brand in the United States, leaping ahead of Ford and Chevrolet for the first time.

GM maintained its firm hold as the world’s largest automaker by selling 8.6 million vehicles. It will likely maintain its position due to aggressive strategies in emerging markets such as China.

GM also leads car comparisons in total revenue. It reported a record $186.8 billion last year, while Ford reported revenue of $164.2 billion, up from $162.3 billion a year earlier. Toyota total revenue last year was roughly $129 billion.
