rental car mexicoRental Car Mexico (map) may require you to purchase comprehensive (theft) and/or collision coverage, if your own policy doesn’t include it. Talk to your insurance agent or with your insurance company about the necessary rental car coverage. Provided you are not on a business trip, the coverage and deductibles you have on your personal auto may extend to the rental car. If anyone else intends to drive your Mexico rental car, check if your coverage will transfer to the other drivers.

Stolen cars are a big problem in Mexico, and as with kidnappings and murders, it’s often the police who are responsible. Foreigners can’t expect the same protections that they may be accustomed to at home, and indeed are “fair-game” for extortion that may extend (and often does) to the judge you are standing in front of. Be very careful in Mexico. American’s don’t have a good understanding of just how very dangerous it is.

When you rent a vehicle in Mexico, carefully inspect it for dents, scratches, broken wipers, etc, and note them on the rental agreement. Otherwise, you you will be charged for all of those when the car is returned. Parking tickets are not issued, the police simply remove the plates from the vehicle, and you must go to the police station to pick them up and pay a stiff fine. Any cars returned to the rental agency without plates will pay an exorbitant fee.
