Sell A Car
Sell a Car by first checking a reliable used cars price guides like KBB and NADA. When you sell a car as a private party you are not generally bound by the FTC’s Used Car Rules and don’t have to supply the “Buyers Guide”. However, you can use the Guide’s list, of the auto’s major systems, as a powerful selling tool; and make sure you have the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) handy.
It is always good to have copies of the reliability reports of your vehicle. These are available through Review reliability reports available through Consumer Reports and the National Safety and Insurance Institute.
A private sale probably will be on an “as is” basis, unless your agreement with the buyer specifically states otherwise. You, as the seller, must live up to the promises stated in the contract. Private sales usually are not covered by “implied warranties” (unspoken, unwritten promises from the seller to the buyer). Sellers in most states can use the words “as is” or “with all faults” in a written notice to buyers to eliminate implied warranties.
When you sell a car that is covered by a unexpired manufacturer’s warranty or separately purchased service contract, make sure the warranties and service contracts are transferable (if that’s part of your agreement).
